ABOUT

The National Hardwood Lumber Association is the main industry group for North American hardwoods. It was founded in 1898, and its headquarters is in Memphis, Tennessee. Its members are companies across the hardwood supply chain: producers, processors, and buyers, from sawmills to distributors and manufacturers.

Its most important job is to write and maintain the hardwood lumber grading rules. The industry uses these rules as a common quality standard when it buys and sells lumber. The association also does inspections and quality control. Its inspectors help companies measure the yield of their lumber and make more money from it.

It also trains people who work in the industry through the National Hardwood Academy. The academy has in-person programs, short courses, online classes, webinars, and classes in Spanish. The group also speaks for the industry to federal and state governments and to private groups. Every year it holds a convention where members can meet each other and learn what is new in the industry.

In short, this association sets the quality rules for hardwood lumber in North America. It also trains the people who work with that lumber and represents the industry.
