ABOUT

Founded in Finland in 2001, Lunawood is a global pioneer in thermally modified wood, producing their signature ThermoWood® products from sustainably sourced Nordic pine and spruce. The process is entirely chemical-free, wood is enhanced using only heat and steam, resulting in durable, stable, and low-maintenance surfaces suitable for facades, interiors, decking, saunas, and landscaping. With production facilities in Kaskinen and Iisalmi, a headquarters in Lahti, and a newly opened facility in Cleveland, Georgia (USA), they now export to over 50 countries.

What makes Lunawood particularly compelling from a biophilic design perspective is their core mission: to reconnect people with nature by bringing the warmth and character of the forest into the built environment. Their products are designed to create genuine sensory connections to natural materials, the texture, grain, and tonal depth of real wood without compromising on performance or sustainability credentials. All raw materials are sourced from certified forests (PEFC/FSC), and their products carry the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, support LEED and BREEAM green building certifications, and come backed by a Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) showing a carbon footprint of just 117 kg CO₂ eq/m³, while storing approximately five times more carbon than is emitted during production.

Their sustainability commitments are equally serious. In 2025, Lunawood reduced their Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 44% against their 2021 baseline,  surpassing their Science Based Target ahead of schedule and now run entirely on renewable electricity across all Finnish production. They are targeting full carbon neutrality in operations by 2035. Their product range, which recently expanded to include a North America Collection made from thermally modified Yellow Poplar and White Ash, has also received international recognition: their Luna Aalto and Luna Triple cladding lines won the 2025 Plus X Award for design and sustainability excellence.
For biophilic design projects that demand both aesthetic integrity and verified environmental performance, Lunawood represents a rare combination of craft, science, and mission alignment.
